Wampa Mask Update

Here’s the Wampa face just after it came out the mold. Its just temporarily added onto the inner skull for the purpose of these pics, so its not properly fitted at this stage. A bit of cleaning up work to do and the onto making the inner mouth, ears and painting, before onto the tedious task of adding the fur. The horns are done & ready for the molding process and will be added just prior to the fur stage. Ignore what looks like a rip under the mouth. that’s actually the edge of the mask now as the design of the costume has changed slightly. You can get an idea of the size of the head compared to a human head as you can just about make out the mannequin head inside the mouth.

October 2016 Update

Not much of an update for October as things have been progressing slowly…..

Work on the Wampa and hangars continues. Had a few nightmares with the Wampa, but its all a learning curve that will come in very handy when doing the following films. The face has been cast and the process of applying the fur has started. I’ll post some pictures in about a week or so showing its progress. I’ll then start stitching the fur together for the body and start on the hands.

The hangars are almost complete. all the details, like the small models of boxes etc, are now fully painted and ready to go. I just need to wire up all the LEDs for the floor lights, so that’s going to take a few days at least. Then its the fun task of piecing it all together and adding the snow and other detailing ready for filming.

The big problem i’m having is finances. As i have said i will be financing the remaining part of this edit myself, there will be no more donation drives until i start work on ROTJ. So i can only go as fast as the spare money i have each month takes me. But when you get a sudden £400+ car repair bill ( thank you UK roads and your damn pot holes that appear too late for you to swerve to avoid them), this seriously hits the speed at which i can continue because it wipes out any funds i had available, for months on end. So i just have to get bits and bobs when i can and work around this type of setback. But i do assure you, i am working as fast as i possibly can to get this thing finished.

But we are almost there….. It’s just that life’s a bitch at times

After the many messages and comments since my last post, i have decided that, in order to finish this edit as soon as possible, i will have to accept these kind offers of donations one last time.

If you want to donate towards the final stage of the project, then you can donate through this site. Just click on one of the paypal icons on the right side of the page. For anyone wanting to donate in a currency other than GBP or USD then you can send donations, through paypal, to adywan@hotmail.co.uk

A rough estimate on the cost of what is left to do is approx £550. This is for the cost of building the section of the Wampa cave (wood, plaster etc) , some more platsil gel 00 for the Wampa, casting silicone , foam, herculite plaster, pigments, and other small materials.

Thanks you

Opening Crawls: Revisited

One of the most iconic things about Star Wars is the opening crawls. This was one thing i really wanted to change though. Why? Well none of the crawls in the saga match. They are all different speeds, placements etc.

This is something i wanted to redo when i did ANH:Revisited, but just couldn’t achieve it at the time. But now, thanks to our CG guy Andreas, it is now possible to have all of the Revisited crawls match each other. Now the speeds and placements match completely. The HD crawls for episodes 4-6 are complete. The prequel crawls will be done when i get to those films because there will be a lot of changes made to the text in those, which i won’t be sorting out until work starts on the films themselves.

Now, when The Force Awakens was released, there was a big fuss made about the font they used in the episode title in the crawl. many complained that they used the wrong font. Well , the font was the one used for Episodes 4 & 5, just slightly thicker. It was only when it came to ROTJ that they used a different font and then followed on with that one with the prequels. So i have used the style that originally appeared in eps 4 & 5, as these were the first ones in the saga and the one used in the very first seen crawl upon release (ESB). Visually, as i won’t be doing a TFA Revisited, the crawls will be almost exact in both colour and font, but not speed etc, mainly down to the new timing of the crawl.

If the main theme sounds a little weird to you then that is because, for this video, as each episode appears on the screen it switches to its corresponding title music form the soundtrack.

Wampa Head Sculpt Progress

Wampa Head Sculpt

Things are progressing nicely. Hangar lights, objects etc have been painted and just need to be weathered now and they’re ready to go. So should only be a few days worth of work to finish those off. Then it will just be adding all the ceiling and floor lights and wiring everything together.

The weather has improved ( gone from wet and miserable to baking hot in the past couple of days). So i’ve started sculpting the Wampa. I’m just at the basic shaping stage at the moment, so it’s very rough, but it’s good to finally be able to start this thing. I’ll get the head sculpted and cast first before moving on to completing the costume and sculpting the hands. I’m basing the sculpt on the puppet version we see attacking Luke at the beginning and NOT the Special Edition version as i feel the original is the best looking version of the Wampa.

The end is getting close 🙂

June 2016 Update

Not really much to update you on. Things aren’t progressing as fast as i had hoped, but that can’t really be helped thanks to the terrible British weather we are having at the moment, but more on that later….

The 3d printed hangar lights have now all been removed from their printing supports and sanded down. One thing that has taken a long time has been wiring all the LED’s , not only for the hangar lights which need to be wired in sets of 4, but also the wall lighting and the floor lighting. Not an easy task i tell you. Thank god i will be moving well away from 1/72 scale and onto 1/48 scale , at least, for the next films.

Now, why is the British weather holding things up? Well i need to be able to spray all the bits and bobs outside for all the priming. The smell is just way too much to do indoors. Now the stuff is all ready to be sprayed, all we have had is rain and storms. bloody typical. lol. Also there is the Wampa. I need at least 3 or 4 days of good weather to do this. I need to be able to clean the mold out with the pressure washer outdoors and left to dry. can’t really work with the weather we are having. But the other thing is that i need to time the sculpt so i can cast the mold and clean all within the space of a few days. can’t really do the sculpt, make the mold and then wait for days in the hope of good weather before cleaning out all the remaining clay. With both the face and the hands to do i would estimate at least a week.

Luckily i have been able to postpone the shooting of the pilots for ROTJ:R until next year now, so that takes a lot of pressure off me. I think it was wishful thinking that i could possibly get the cockpits and the costumes, amongst other things, done in the space of 2 months. So i no longer have to worry about getting things finished by July. As long as i have at least one whole day of good weather, i can get all the priming done on all the hangar parts ready for the airbrushing and weathering. Then its just a case of assembling everything ready for shooting. So, even though i no longer have the july deadline, it is still being released this year.

A trailer will be posted closer to the release date and this will reveal the actual release date of ESB:R.

It won’t be long now…………

Adywan In The Wall Street Journal

Adywan had the privilege of being interviewed for the Wall Street Journal:

‘Star Wars’ Fans Feel the Force Calling Them Back to Original Cuts

Some of the details aren’t correct (Adywan is not disabled and doesn’t live in that town), but it’s a decent overview of the Star Wars Fan Edit culture.
